Is your website Attractive or is it just a Functional Website?

functional websiteAn attractive website design may get you accolades from your friends or may even win you an award, but a “functional” website will get you customers. Since its customer engagement and interaction we seek in our day-to-day business, more so than winning an award, let’s discuss the difference between attractive and functional, and why you really need to have a website that is both!

Attractive Website vs. Functional Website

When I land on a website, I won’t say that I am not in part influenced by the design, hey who isn’t? I think it is even fair to say that most people would have more trust in a website if it is attractive than a website that has an outdated design or very plain. I mean obviously, if they don’t care about their appearance, how much could they really care about their customers?

To website owners, a functional website is generally thought of as everything is “working fine” but, to customers, functional means that the website provides them with the information they seek in a friendly, easy to use format. A few items that make a good functional website could include 1) ease of navigation, 2) a prominently displayed phone number, 3) call-to-action buttons, and 4) a simplified checkout process.

So, is my website Attractive or just a Functional website or both?

Search Engine Optimization

referred to as SEO has taken a turn, for the better or for worse, only time will tell.seo-sm

Google, the internet monster we all know and love has once again made changes that directly affect the way search engine optimization professionals obtain valuable information used in the marketing of your business on the internet.

This does not mean that your website will not be found anymore in organic searches, no does it mean new websites can’t be found in organic searches, it just means that SEO professionals will need to adapt and make changes to their clients search engine optimization plan. Some of you reading this may have already found that some of your pages that were ranking in the top 5-10 pages of organic search results are no longer in the top 200. Why?

“How often should I post to my blog?”

That is one of the most popular questions I am asked when meeting with a client. The abbreviated answer is, as often as possible. It appears that the jury is out on this question and the answers you will find on the internet (and here) will vary from the extreme to the minimalistic. So how do you decide how often is too often or not enough?

The first step is to understand what is the need for your blog. Is it to promote a website, service, product, or event? Maybe you just want to express yourself, talk about your travels, family, or more. After you determine the purpose of the blog start thinking about you first 3 posts. Make some notes about what you will write, maybe you’ll want to add images, references or otherwise. Once you have compiled all the parts, you can begin to write.

Next step is decide the frequency that you will post to your blog, so ask yourself the following questions…

  1. How often would you want to read your blog?
  2. Can you provide new “fresh” content for each post?; will it be an ongoing series, such as Part 1?
  3. Is you content engaging?
  4. Is your content relevant and informative?
  5. Can you post be short and to the point?
  6. Is you content time sensitive such as for a promotion or event?

So, how did you do? Were you able to say yes to questions 2, 3 & 4? If not, you may not be ready for blogging yet. The best blogs contain information that people want to know and learn about. Compelling, informative, engaging content is what your readers will want and if provided to them, they will return for more, and even better, subscribe to your blog so they receive notice of updates that you post.

I didn’t really ever answer the question of frequency did I? Well by now you realize that frequency is related to the content of your blog. If you can provide fresh new content daily, then go ahead and post everyday.

When discussing this topic with clients I usually recommend to start yourself off with a blog post every other day up to 3 per week. Review any comments you receive on each post and by doing so you can gauge if your visitors would be want or benefit from more or less posts.

Keep in mind that short, to the point, creative and informative posts will gain the most readership. Adding analytical is another good way to gauge your visitors. By comparing the new vs. returning viewers, the amount of time they spend on your site and the amount of pages (posts) visited you will gain greater insight into the content your viewers like to read and again decide if there is a need to increase or decrease the frequency.

How do I get quality backlinks to my website?

That is surely one of the top questions when discussing SEO with clients. For years we have been told that backlinks are so important to our ranking with search engines.

Why is this?back links

Search engines view backlinks as a trust and relevant relationship between the websites. When the website linking in to yours is well ranked with search engines, the backlink will help your ranking. It is important not to fall for the many internet offers to provide 100’s of quality backlinks for a just a few dollars. You don’t know the quality of these links and they could hurt your ranking instead of helping. The other issue is that the search engines are smart, they know when something strange is happening, such as a new website with 2 backlinks growing to 400 in a matter of days. Not worth the money as in the end you may have to start all over again.

So how do get quality backlinks, relevant to our business and customers. There are many ways to go about this and one popular and good way is join a link exchange service. Some services are automatic and some you can go through a vetting process to ensure that linking sites are relevant to your business. Of course you can always do it yourself, but who has time for that right? Actually, we do!

I was always taught that for any type of business advertising is both necessary and low in return. I have always believed and promoted that a 1% return on your advertising dollars is considered good.dollar-sign

So if we do the math, a pay per click campaign that averages a cost of .40 per click will return to you .004 cents in new business. That’s a pretty small return on your money, but you did only spend .40 cents to get there, that’s less than a pack of gum. Not bad.

Let’s step it up notch and think in real-world terms. When working with Ad Words or dealing in PPM your going to need to set a budget. If your budget is too low you could burn through it with good ad placement in a matter of hours or days depending on if you set a daily or monthly budget.

So for example, a $300/month advertising budget with AdWords should return $ 3.00. Bumping up the numbers to $1,000 per month budget and an incredible 10% return can bring you $100 in new business. Is that realistic? Honestly, I can’t tell you.

What I can tell you is that for a few cents less than your 10% return on a $1000 investment, I can bring you a much greater return. I can’t provide an exact number, since that depends on your products or services, but I can show you what I mean.

I am a web designer and developer dealing with mainly small businesses. My website development packages start at $350 for a simple facelift, and generally average $750. Using the average sale price if $750, and an advertising cost of $99.99 I am getting a return of an unbelievable 750% on my advertising dollars.

How do I do it? Ah the whole reason why you are still reading this, to find out how I do it. I won’t tell you everything now, but I will tell you that you don’t need to advertise in the local media, you won’t be paying per anything, only once. And I will tell you that you will need a computer, and have the ability to work from home or outside the office.

If you want to learn how to advertise in a simple, inexpensive and residual manner, then subscribe to my monthly newsletter (you can unsubscribe at anytime) and I will send you the information. Just submit your information here and I will add you to my newsletter and send you the full story.
