So what the heck does this mean? To keep it simple we will discuss the 2 main types of printing. Offset and Digital. a. Offset is done on a press at a local print shop or may be sent out to a print house. In either case the printer will have specific requirements for printing your logo design on envelopes, cards, or other. Spot colors are the most common requirement for a print shop as they do not use the traditional ink cartridges like your printer at home. To create spot colors you will need to select colors from a Pantone® color chart. b. Digital printing is done with a 4 color process on large capacity machines, with the 4 ink colors known as CMYK. Big box office supply retailers, and internet based printers use the digital printing process to reproduce your logo design.
So why do I care? When your logo is created by us, we provide a final logo design that is 300dpi (hi-resolution), with CMYK colors. This is perfect for your digital printing requirements, but does not work well for an off-set printer. Remember we mentioned spot colors above? Well think of a spot color as a can of paint. Whether its your first brush full or the bottom of the can, the color remains consistent. With CMYK, the colors can vary slightly as the ink levels of each (CMYK) cartridge begin to go down with use. In the end you will have slight variations in the final printed product between the first card or envelope to the last. The variations may be so slight you will never see it, but we want you to know.
CMYK or Spot? The decision is ultimately yours. If consistency in color is of the utmost importance and using an off-set printer is your desire, then Spot colors are needed.
